Atoms2Anatomy Fund

The Atoms2Anatomy Fund broadly supports the development of Dr. Sebastiaan Van Nuffel’s research group at Maastricht University. The aim of this group is the development and application of imaging mass spectrometry techniques in life sciences research. The imaging mass spectrometry technique that the research group mainly focuses on is Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).

A specific goal is the development of a multi-scale approach to investigate biological models and clinical samples from atoms to anatomy. The development of such technologies and methods should make it possible to visualize the genome, proteome, metabolome and atomic composition of an entire organism in 3D. Such a holistic model will provide fundamental insights into biological processes, disease mechanisms, pharmacology and toxicology, which will ultimately improve the lives of people and society as a whole.

The research group focuses not only on fundamental research, but also on its application through multidisciplinary collaborations with other academics and/or industrial partners. For example, we are currently working with several pathologists to answer such questions as the origin of skin color and how HPV can cause tumors.

Mr. Dr. R. Vreeken (Associate Professor, Maastricht MultiModal Molecular Imaging Institute, UM).
