Recently, the HersenStrijd Fund received a generous donation of €24,500 from a private foundation to support research into severe acute brain injury in the intensive care unit (ICU) in Maastricht.
The funds will be used to investigate a Closed Loop System that can automatically adjust cerebral blood flow every minute. The brain requires a continuous and adequate blood supply, especially in cases of swelling or contusion. This system builds on previous research and can significantly ease the workload of ICU staff. By doing so, it is hoped that more brain cells can be preserved, offering brain injury patients a better chance of recovery.
This research represents an important advancement in the treatment of severe brain injuries following accidents. And it is much needed; in the Netherlands, the number of people suffering long-term damage continues to rise each year, partly due to serious cycling accidents. ICU researchers expect to test the first Closed Loop System in the intensive care unit in 2025. This valuable contribution enables a significant step forward in brain injury research.
